As much as I like predictability in life, I love the unpredictability in Raku. Raku literally translates as “happiness in the accident” and it refers to a type of low-firing process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing in the 16’s century. I do western-style raku, which means that I remove pottery from the kiln at about 950 Celsius degree, while at bright red heat, and place it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors in glazes and clay bodies. The drastic thermal shock also produces cracking—known as crackling since it is deliberate. The crackle pattern is only on the glaze surface and does not damage the pot.
Raku pieces are neither microwaveable nor dishwasher friendly.
Raku pieces are not food safe due to their porous nature. Each piece is hand-built and individually finished and glazed. Natural variations from piece to piece are to be expected due to the handmade process.
